Our first consumer radio was a 16 Channel transmitter & receiver set, simply called “The PocketWizard”. Since then, we have created various models to fit virtually any setup you might need. This page will help you understand some of the main differences between our products. You can find more details and specifications about each product in the Product menus above.

Which PocketWizard is best for me?

PocketWizard wireless triggers are available in two types: manual radios and ControlTL system radios.

The Manual Radios:

Manual radios include the PlusX, Plus IIIe, Plus IVe and MultiMAX II.  These radios send out a simple “fire now!” signal and have a single pin hot shoe contact. Some have more advanced features like Zone Control, Long Range mode, and Intervalometer settings. The manual radios are compatible with virtually any flash or camera that can be triggered via a single pin trigger or sync port and can sync a remote flash up the camera’s X-sync.

The TTL and Power Control Radios & Accessories:

The FlexTT5 for Nikon and FlexTT6 for Canon have TTL pins to fully communicate with the camera and flashes and can send advanced signals like power control, High Speed Sync, HyperSync, and TTL to remote speedlights and other TTL flash systems. Some ControlTL receivers and adapters also communicate with some strobes and light meters, sending power information to remote flashes and strobes. Below the images is a brief overview of ControlTL compatibility. These radios also are compatible with virtually any flash or camera that can be triggered via a single pin trigger or sync port in manual modes, just like the manual radios above.

Manual and ControlTL radios can also be used together, depending on your needs and equipment. For example, you can use a FlexTT5 on the camera to trigger to Speedlights attached to FlexTT5s and strobes attached to Plus IIIs. Most of our radios are available as kits as well, to save you money and make it easier to have all you need in one place.

PocketWizard has also partnered with other companies, such as Sekonic, Profoto, and Dynalite. You can find strobes with built in PocketWizard receivers as well as PocketWizard radio modules for your light meter.

Please note: We are currently transitioning our radios to a new firmware protocol, called the E Release – you can learn more about it here. The E Release firmware line uses different frequencies than our current frequencies to provide longer range, better reliability, and a few additional features. The E Release is currently available for the Plus III, Plus IV, Nikon FlexTT5, and the FCC Power MC2. We are currently working on the E Release for the MultiMAX II and FlexTT6 but do not currently have an anticipated release date. Radios with the E Release will still be backwards compatible with Legacy PocketWizard radios via firmware downgrades. Please see our Wiki for more details.
